CHOOSING THE BEST VEHICLE EXTINGUISHER

While there are a few different types of fire extinguishers (water, foam, carbon dioxide, wet chemical), we recommend using Dry Chemical Powder extinguishers (ABE) in your personal or commercial vehicles. They have good performance against different types of fires and are a great multi-purpose fire extinguisher well suited for all types of vehicles (cars, 4WD, boats, buses...).

Let's talk about vehicle fire extinguisher sizes. A larger extinguisher is more powerful, but heavy and more difficult to handle. Therefore, we recommend larger extinguishers for commercial vehicles (eg: transport flammable or dangerous goods, or drive a larger-sized truck). On the other end, small extinguishers require less training to use, and have a small gross weight and physical size so anyone in the car can use it. Generally, 1kg or 1.5kg is most suitable for a car, while 2.5kg or 4.5kg are more suitable for a 4WD, truck or bus.

Dry Powder Fire extinguisher types and fire classes

For Hybrid and Electric vehicles an additional F-500 extinguisher (first agent to extinguish Lithium-Ion Battery Fires) is recommended.

WHAT IS A VEHICLE EXTINGUISHER USED FOR?

While most modern-day vehicles are well-designed and very safe. they can still catch fire; For example: car accidents, Electrical System Failure, Fuel System Leaks, Overheating Engine, Overheating Catalytic Converters...

VEHICLE EXTINGUISHER SERVICE & MAINTENANCE

In a commercial vehicle, all extinguishers must undergo hydrostatic testing and recharge every five years (every year for Foam extinguishers). All fire extinguishers must carry a maintenance tag that shows their last inspection date, and must be serviced every 6 months. Once your extinguisher has been discharged, it must be pressure tested & recharged, or replaced.

In a personal vehicle, extinguishers can last up to 5 years but you need to check them regularly (we recommend twice a year to check the following: pressure is at the recommended level, nozzle or hose are not obstructed, pin and tamper seal is intact, no dents, leaks, rust, chemical deposits and other signs of wear). We also recommend shaking the extinguisher regularly as the dry powder can compress over time and make the extinguisher malfunctioned.

VEHICLE EXTINGUISHER DO NOT USE ON:

Vehicle extinguishers should not be used on fires involving combustible gases, such as LPG, Natural gas and acetylene, and also are not suitable for use on combustible metals such as aluminum shaving or magnesium, and cooking fats and oils.
